The rain did not stop the work planned from taking place with the 14 willing collaborators, distributed among the tasks of pruning and cleaning the beds, planting corn intercropped with pigeon peas, planting potatoes, and harvesting a bountiful crop of peanuts.

In an area of 478 sq. yards, which had previously been an ordinary kitchen garden that required a great deal of energy to maintain on the part of the collaborators, and challenged by various invasive plants and persistent anthills, began to use the agroforestry system last October.

With this system, which is a natural form of cultivation, with a great diversity of species in a wooded area, the group has noted a considerable positive shift, both in terms of the quality of the harvest as well as the reduction of  pests invasions and the  time spent for managing the garden, according to Maria Regina Godinho, who is responsible for this sector of the Light-Nucleus.

The day’s work was special for everyone, because the teachers João Batista Santiago Frietas, agronomist with a doctoral in Agricultural Astronomy, and Othon Carvalho, an astrologer, were staying in the Light-Nucleus, while passing through São Paulo, coming from Fortaleza on their way to the Light-Community of Figueira, in Carmo da Cachoeira, Minas Gerais.

Besides participating in the activities of the agroforest, the teachers also gave the group a round of talks on Agricultural Astronomy, a science that stimulates the recovery of the old knowledge on the cultivation of the land, based on the movements of the stars.

In the end, it was definitely proven through the clarifications provided by the professor João Batista, that it was truly a special day, because according to the agricultural astronomy calendar, the time was favorable for the sowing and harvesting that was done, thus making evident the intuitive capacity of the group that organized the event.
