Members of the Fraternidade – International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF), the Light-Community of Flor de LystheGrace of God Monastery, and the European Light-Community participated in a first aid training, which took place in Fatima, Portugal.

The training was given by Porfírio dos Santos, a nurse certified by the INEM-Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica (National Institute of Medical Emergencies), with a broad experience in the area of first aid, who began the meeting with the general principles of first aid, showing what the role of a first responder is, as well as the types of first aid.

The course began on the morning of February 22, and was organized into two segments, one on theory in the morning, and the  practical one in the afternoon. There were 25 participants physically present, with 40 members of the European Light-Network participating in the theoretical segment through the Internet. The practical segment was attended by all those present, but according to the training standards, only 10 were active participants in the drills.

In the afternoon portion, the focus was on what a quick intervention should be like by the first responder who witnesses a respiratory arrest, using the BSL algorithms (Basic Support of Life). In this case, the first responder must verify the safety conditions of the situation, the state of awareness of the victim, the permeability of the airways, how to ask for help from the emergency services, how to apply external cardiac compressions alternating with blowing of air until the arrival of assistance by specialized professionals.

On March 14 the second and last part of this training will take place, with two practical segments.
