The security that nearly all of us seek in our lives springs from our attunement

The security that nearly all of us seek in our lives springs from our attunement with our higher states. In one of his trips, Jesus was lodged in the house of two sisters called Martha and Mary. When he arrived, Mary sat at this feet, reclined her head on Jesus, made silence and quietened herself. Martha, on the contrary, churned herself in many chores: she swept the floor, fixed food, moved without stopping.

Noticing that Mary remained quiet and silente, Martha asked Jesus: “Master, don’t you seem that my sister left me alone with the house chores? Tell her to help me, then”. Jesus answered: “Martha, Martha, you are restless with many things, but just one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the best part and this will never be taken from her”.

In this brief episode, we see the importance of quietude and of silence

In this brief episode, we see the importance of quietude and of silence for us to find “the best part”. Is it the security so much sought after today and not found externally anymore? In reality, this contemplative attitude can take us not only to balance, but it also helps us find our goal in life, which we do not always know.

The quietude and silence of Mary do not mean non-action or inertia, because someone in this state of calm and solitude can act in a more active and intense way than someone who is too busy. But what do they mean, then?

Quietude is an inner attitude

Quietude is an inner attitude that does not seek acknowledgement, gratitude or even being noticed. In the episode that we have narrated, Mary was simply silent and, being silent, she did not need to show what she was doing. Martha, on the contrary, worked and drew attention to the fact that she was being useful. The quietude, this retreat of Martha are forces that few know.

And what does a silente atitude mean?

And what does a silente atitude mean? Is silence just to be quiet, without saying anything? Is it being mute? If that were the case, both women could be considered silent, as they were not talking. In reality, silence is more than that. Silence is an inner state in which there is no criticism, nor desires, nor demands or internal or external influences.

Martha was not silent, because, though she was quiet, whe was observing Mary and was mentally criticizing her. Mary, who remained sitting and did not try to control her sister, was silent and, according to Jesus, had chosen the best part.

What about solitude?

What about solitude? Solitude is the consequence of silence and of disinterested action. The one that is solitary in this sense strengthens themselves, because the whole of their energy remains concentrated inside the individual and can be radiated to the world as a scent or as a power of elevation.

When we are quiet and silent, we do not desire, do not criticize, do not compare: we are harmonious in ourselves, not divided, and we feel united with everything that surrounds us. In this state, we find harmony and we attune with another order of things. In this state, we can act in a more decided and active way than someone who churns.

Quietude, silence and solitude

Consequently, quietude, silence and solitude make it possible for us not only to live well, but also to be useful to the world in this time that is so lacking in principles and values.

The lesson we extract from the reply of Jesus is that in quietude, in silence and in solitude, though co-existing with other as Mary, we find inner security and harmony.
