The Fraternidade – International Humanitarian Federation, begins on this Saturday, December 30, its 19th Humanitarian Mission. This time, the destiny is the Hinterlands (called Zona da Mata) of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. There, about ten cities were devastated, at the beginning of the month, by the waters of the intense storms that led to the overflowing of the Casca River, that crosses the region. The floods left the result of thousands of homeless and a lot of destruction.

The missionaries will concentrate their actions in one of the most devastated places: the district of Vista Alegre, in the city of Rio Casca.

The Humanitarian Mission will be fulfilled by ten volunteers, of which six participate for the first time. The group gathers health professionals (a doctor, a dentist, a psychologist, a rescuer and a naturopath) and members of the Planetary Network-of-Light. At first, the team will remain in the place for about ten days.

Missionaries pack several subtle medicines

“We are ready to help in whatever is necessary”, said Vitorio, the coordinator of the Mission. The group transports a significant amount of allopathic medicines, such as serums, antibiotics, antihistamines, as well as subtle medicines. They also bring a supply of a lot of material and equipment of cleaning, such as shovels, hoes, saws, high-pressure washing machines, squeegee, brooms, disinfectant, sanitary water, etc. Furthermore, they also bring thermic blankets, special boxes to capture snakes, food and clothes for donation.

This will be the second humanitarian mission that the Fraternidade will conduct in the state of Minas Gerais. The first took place in November 2015, in the city of Mariana, where the breaking of a dam of a mining company provoked a flood of mud and mine tailings that devastated several places and caused the greatest environmental disaster in the history of Brazil.

Location

Planning meeting at the Headquarters of the Fraternidade

The city of Rio Casca is one of the 142 towns of the Zona da Mata Hinterlands. It is located at 470 kilometers Northeast of Carmo da Cachoeira, where the Headquarters of the Fraternidade is, and 200 kilometers East of Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. The city has 14 thousand inhabitants, of which 1400 live in the district of Vista Alegre, where the missionaries of the Fraternidade will work.

The city is crossed by the Casca River, which overflowed on December 5, due to the intense rains (nearly 300 millimeters in 24 hours) and caused floods more than two meters high that carried people, animals, vehicles, equipment and everything that was on the way. Many houses became under water. The emergency situation continues, with adults, elders and children lodged in precarious shelters.

Classification of allopathic medicines

The Zona da Mata (Zone of the Jungle), so-called because it is part of the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Jungle), is one of the 12 eco-systems of Minas Gerais. It is located in the Southeast of the state, near the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. The Mata Atlântica extends along the Brazillian coast, from the Northern state of Piauí to the Southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul.
