In the bakery of the Nova Terra Light-Community, affiliated with the Fraternity – International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF), on a weekly basis, delicious home-made loaves of bread are produced for the meals of the Light-Community. The baked breads are cornmeal, whole meal and sweet breads, as well as the famous Orange-pro-nobis (Pereskia aculeata) bread.<\/p>\n\n\n

For those not familiar with it, the ora-pro-nobis is a Brazilian native plant, of the unconventional food plants category (UCFP), easy to grow, not needing any special care in its cultivation, and very nutritious. It is also rich in proteins, as well as having nutrients such as iron, magnesium, zinc and vitamins A and E.<\/p>\n\n\n

“Here at the\u00a0Nova Terra Light-Community\u00a0we have a few plants, and they were already known in daily meals mainly through salads. However, because it is very abundant, the idea was suggested that we include this plant as an ingredient in bread…, and it seems to have been an excellent idea,” explain the residents.<\/p>\n\n\n

“The breads have a unique flavor and texture: denser and very tasty, and the feeling it gives of fullness and nutrition is also remarkable, because of the properties of the plant. Besides that, the breads are greenish, which adds that special touch,” they say.<\/p>\n\n\n
