{"id":123846,"date":"2021-09-29T13:50:25","date_gmt":"2021-09-29T16:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/?p=123846"},"modified":"2021-09-29T13:50:25","modified_gmt":"2021-09-29T16:50:25","slug":"the-important-task-of-reusing-food-and-avoiding-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/the-important-task-of-reusing-food-and-avoiding-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"The Important Task of Reusing Food and Avoiding Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">On this September 29, chosen by the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN<\/a><\/u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a>to be International Awareness Day on Food Loss and Waste, we highlight some simple actions developed by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/?s=+s%C3%A3o+carlos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Figueira Light-Nucleus in S\u00e3o Carlos<\/a>, affiliated with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fraternity \u2013 International Humanitarian Federation (FIHF)<\/a>, which contribute to less food and natural resources being wasted daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/brasil\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UnitedNations<\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\">, a third of the food produced worldwide for human consumption is lost or wasted, while 800 million people in the world suffer from a lack of food. On average, each Brazilian family, according to this research, wastes the alarming amount of 128.8 kilos (280 lbs.) of food every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">There is an urgent need for re-evaluating the way modern society has been dealing with this question, and how small and simple actions adopted by each person in daily life can help in mitigating the situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Actions of the Figueira Light-Nucleus in S\u00e3o Carlos<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/?s=+s%C3%A3o+carlos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Light-Nucleus<\/a><\/u>\u00a0fosters various actions in the protection of natural resources and in the whole cycle of production, storage and use of food.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\"><b>Planning and reuse<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Meals are always planned according to the number of people present, as Sister Mar\u00eda del Verd\u00fan, monk of the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mensajerosdivinos.org\/en\/grace-mercy-order\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grace Mercy Order<\/a><\/u>, explains: \u201cour rule is to not place even a grain of rice in the trash; In the first bowl we rinse off the remnants, in the second bowl we soap the dishes, in the third bowl the first rinse, in the fourth bowl the final rinse with just a trickle of water. All vegetable discards, the skins and shells of the fruit and legumes we eat are used as fertilizer for the vegetable garden through a composting system;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">3. To enrich the soil, we use limestone, cattle manure, sawdust, coffee grounds, and the results of the compost fermentation;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">4.
