{"id":111688,"date":"2020-02-17T17:14:31","date_gmt":"2020-02-17T20:14:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/?p=111688"},"modified":"2020-02-17T17:14:31","modified_gmt":"2020-02-17T20:14:31","slug":"the-situation-of-venezuelans-in-colombia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/the-situation-of-venezuelans-in-colombia\/","title":{"rendered":"The Situation of Venezuelans in Colombia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the intention of getting to know better the gaps in the humanitarian response and the real situation of the Venezuelan immigrants in Colombia, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bethany.org\/\"><strong>Bethany Global Services<\/strong><\/a>agency organized some research in the cities of Bogota, Tunja, and Duitama, and invited the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/humanitarian-missions\/\"><b>Fraternidade \u2013 International Humanitarian Missions (FIHM)<\/b><\/a>\u00a0to participate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The research was done on January 22 and 23, and 34 people were interviewed, including Colombians, Venezuelans, and employees of organizations that offer services to the immigrants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The lack of work is the greatest difficulty the interviewed Venezuelans have to face. They also report that they were unaware of the greater part of the assistance offered by the international agencies to the immigrants, and said that, in general, they feel welcomed by the Colombians, although some affirm having experienced prejudice and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-111583 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Missionaries of the\u00a0<b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/humanitarian-missions\/\">Fraternidade-Missions (FIHM)<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/b>and the team of the\u00a0<b><strong>Bethany<\/strong><\/b><u>\u00a0<\/u>agency did interviews in various places of the Colombian capital, Bogota. In a lodging place close to the center of the city, they heard stories from the immigrants about the hard conditions they are living in; in spite of paying rent, each family lives in a small room with a bathroom, without ventilation and poor lighting in the hallways.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Among those interviewed, some Colombians could understand the difficulties the immigrants were experiencing; others showed quite a bit of resistance and strong negative feelings in relation to the Venezuelans because of episodes of robbery and crime in general in the central region of Bogota.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moving On<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">When asked how the immigrants deal with the stress generated by the situation in which they live, some said that they have the support of their families, but the majority reported that they simply \u201ctake a deep breath and continue on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The research also points to some children being able to attend school, who appear to be happy with this activity. According to the stories of the mothers, \u201cthis brought greater tranquility to the families.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Children and Adolescents<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-111580 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota02-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota02-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota02-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota02-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota02-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/img-entrevistas-venezuelanos-bogota02.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The research done by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bethany.org\/\"><b><strong>Bethany Global Services<\/strong><\/b><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/missoes-humanitarias\/\"><b><strong>Fraternidade \u2013 International Humanitarian Missions (FIHM)<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0<\/a>included two cities in the interior of Colombia, Tunja and Duitama. In these cities, the research had the objective of identifying and initiating programs or interventions for the protection and assistance of the migrant and displaced children and adolescents, in transit or with an intention to stay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The research showed that there are openings for children in the Tunja schools, but the municipality does not have a support center for the immigrants.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tiredness and Hunger<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">A family of walkers with three children, four women and four men, was identified. They were hungry, cold, and tired. Two children showed symptoms of illness and nausea. They couldn\u2019t find shelter in Tunja to rest during the night, to eat, or for personal hygiene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">\u00a0According to a Colombian person that offers help to the walkers, who did not want to be identified, there are outbreaks of\u00a0racism\u00a0in the region, and she herself was threatened because of helping the immigrants. She emphasizes that support routes throughout the area and food in the shelters are all lacking, and points out that there are stories of recruitment and kidnapping in one of the cities of Boyac\u00e1.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"ES\">Duitama<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">In the municipality of Duitama, a family group of 15 people were visited.
