{"id":111370,"date":"2020-02-05T14:52:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T17:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/?p=111370"},"modified":"2020-02-05T14:52:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T17:52:00","slug":"artisan-group-of-the-indigenous-shelter-pintolandia-carry-out-harvesting-of-the-buriti-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/artisan-group-of-the-indigenous-shelter-pintolandia-carry-out-harvesting-of-the-buriti-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Artisan group of the indigenous shelter Pintol\u00e2ndia carry out a harvesting of the buriti trees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i>On December 21, 2019, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/about-us\/\"><strong>Fraternidade \u2013 International Humanitarian Federation\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>organized the collection of buriti (a kind of palm), raw material for the products of the Venezuelan indigenous artisans of the Warao tribe, in the Pintol\u00e2ndia shelter in Roraima.<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-shortcode\"><iframe title=\"Ind\u00edgenas do abrigo Pintol\u00e2ndia fazem colheita de buriti para artesanato\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/91WgXr9GkWw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The tradition of the Warao culture considers buriti to be\u00a0<b><strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/ojidu-the-warao-tree-of-life\/\">the tree of life\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/b>,\u00a0or\u00a0<em>ojidu\u00a0<\/em>in their own language, for it represents a livelihood for all of the community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">From the stem, a flour called\u00a0<em>yuruma<\/em>\u00a0is prepared, besides getting very nutritious\u00a0 grubs from it, and using the fruit for consumption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">In additon, the fiber of the leaves is used as a source of income through their handicrafts, with the production of hammocks for sleeping, baskets, bags, trays, jars, among other objects, that won \u00a0an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/en\/exhibit-ojidu-warao-tree-of-life-completes-its-first-week-at-casa-museum-in-sao-paulo-and-charms-everyone\/\"><b><strong>exhibition in 2019 at the museum<\/strong><\/b><\/a>\u00a0A Casa do Objeto Brasileiro (The House of the Brazilian Object), in Sao Paulo, where the artisans were given all the money from the sale of their handicrafts. In their celebrations, they still use the braiding of the leaves for decorations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111151 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti03.jpg\" alt=\"Colheita Buriti - Miss\u00e3o Roraima\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti03-200x267.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti03-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti03-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti03-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti03.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Early in the morning, the bus arrived at the shelter to transport the women and men with the expertise in buritizal to the outskirts of the city of Boa Vista. During the trip, boots and machetes were distributed to help with the harvesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The buriti palms generally grow near water, and the harvesting was done in water almost up to the knees. Even so, the team moved quickly. A few hours was enough time to collect the material needed for the next pieces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111154 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02.jpg\" alt=\"Colheita Buriti - Miss\u00e3o Roraima\" width=\"1000\" height=\"749\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02-600x449.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02-800x599.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img-colheita-buriti02.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Cutting the buds of the new foliage of the buriti palm allows the process to be sustainable, without harming the tree, which sprouts again within three months, keeping the buritizal growing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">After harvesting, the fiber goes through a manual process of preparation, cooking and drying until it is ready for the weaving.
