Around the board, there are no differences, all parts have the same pieces, the same possibilities,\u201d says Sister Carmela, missionary nun of the <strong>FFHI Fraternidade International Humanitarian Federation<\/strong>, on the game of chess.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Since May, Venezuelan children and youngsters in Boa Vista, Roraima state of Brazil, participate in weekly chess workshops promoted by the organization. Classes began at the Nova Cana\u00e3 shelter and in July they were also implemented at the Pintol\u00e2ndia indigenous shelter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThe game is meant to support them, especially minors, as an educational support,\u201d says Carmela, one of the workshops&#8217; coordinators.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Since August the workshops have had the support and guidance of Edgard Zanette, philosophy professor and founder of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uerr.edu.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><strong>Universidade Estadual de Roraima (UERR)<\/strong><\/b><\/a>\u00a0chess club.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;I was very happy to be able to\u00a0fit<\/em><em>\u00a0the chess project into my schedule, demonstrate the game and bring the children into the playful world of chess,&#8221; says the professor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">Besides being fun, chess is known for its ability to develop creativity, mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and promotes improvements in self-esteem, patience, and empathy.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>How it started<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-109586 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01.jpg\" alt=\"Oficinas de xadrez em Roraima\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01-1200x900.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.fraterinternacional.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/capa-mat-xadrex01.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">The first activity, sister Carmela explains, came spontaneously at the Nova Cana\u00e3 shelter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe put a chess game tray in the cafeteria and waited for those interested.
