With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the population living on the street is even more vulnerable. Touched by that reality, the members of the Guarujá Light-Network-SP and the Santos Light-Network-SP went out into the streets to distribute food and personal hygiene products to those people.

“Yes, there are still angels like the people who visit us and offer us food,” says a street person when they received bananas from Wanderley Freitas, a member of the Guarujá Light-Network group.

“Yes, there are still angels like the people who visit us and offer us food,” says a street person when they received bananas from Wanderley Freitas, a member of the Guarujá Light-Network group.

“We have heard several stories about the extreme difficulties they are experiencing, because they are unable to get donations, they are unable to sell the recycled materials they collect, and they are not receiving social assistance,” points out Wanderley Freitas.

“We are seeing a worsening of the living conditions of many people in a socially vulnerable situation over the last few weeks, and we are also focusing on the street population,” says Rosi Freitas, coordinator of the São Paulo Light-Network.

With the donation of five boxes of bananas, made by a local merchant, the group of the Guarujá Light-Network was able to help 40 people. The group of the Santos Light-Network delivered 100 kits with bread, juice, margarine, cookies, bananas, soap, toilet paper, and animal food for those who own animals.

Andrea Ferreira, a member of the Santos Light-Network, highlighted that “we are very sure of the importance of this small delivery when we hear phrases such as ‘I’m glad that the coronavirus did not stop you,’ or ‘this conversation feeds us.’ We are grateful for being able to carry out such a humble task, and for knowing that when we give the kit, we give hope in each little bag.”

“We know that these donations are temporary help. A meal, a blanket, a packed lunch, bread, or fruit can provide relief for an evening, but they don’t nip the problem in the bud. Still, we try to bring a little relief, even if for a day, because behind each face, each look, there is a story,” ends Rosi Freitas.
