Throughout life we can perceive that to in order to be sane, it is important to cultivate serenity. But how to manage this? How not to let ourselves be affected by what happens around us?
First, we have to become aware that serenity is a state that comes from within, from our inner being. Thus, nothing outside us must be a hindrance for us to manifest this state. We can develop it when we acquire neutrality before the events and we follow our path without dispersion or disorder. Who conquers this attitude becomes a fortress and is not affected by circumstances.

Serenity does not depend on external factors; because of this, it is pointless to seek it in people, in situations or environments. And, as we have said, it can only be found within us. On the other hand, the world is our field of work to exercise it. Current life, so troubled for the most people, is a test to evaluate the degree of serenity that we can attain and, at the same time, an incentive to strengthen it.

When we train the discipline of a rhythmic life, we stop being anxious for things to begin or end according to our expectations, nearly always without any basis. Thus, we can channel attention, thought and feeling to the present moment, and not to a future that we imagine. In this way, daily routine will not disturb us anymore and, at last, we will be able to perceive that life never ends – our existence, then, becomes liberated from the limits of time.

We attain serenity through the alignment of our human, external consciousness with spiritual levels, the levels of the soul. This can be obtained more easily after we have imprinted a harmonious rhythm in daily life.

It would be important to reserve a moment during the day to be in quietness. At this moment, with the brain at rest, we watch what passes in our mind. What we will do from now on will depend on our temperament and on the kind of thoughts that emerge. We can simply see them pass or try to transform them. In time, the thoughts will calm themselves and we enter another phase: that of observing our breath, without interfering in its natural rhythm, however.

This quietening must be conducted without concern for results. We may practice for years, apparently without any result. But some day we realize that our mind has become calmer, more concentrated, and at last we become serene.
